Just as Austria is preparing for another lockdown, I publish a Vegan in Bad Ischl travel guide. But to be honest, it helps me just to daydream about traveling and maybe you’re like me!
Making plans on what I will do once we can travel, or even leave the house again, is definitely a way for me to cope with the current state of the world.
Once traveling to different places is a thing again, Bad Ischl is such a beautiful place to visit, and as I’m about to show you, you can definitely find some amazing vegan goodies in Bad Ischl!

Where to find vegan food in Bad Ischl
Goiserer Mühle
Okay, this isn’t technically IN Bad Ischl, but since we spent half a day in Hallstatt before traveling to Bad Ischl, we decided on a lunch break in Bad Goisern.
It’s pretty much exactly halfway between Hallstatt and Bad Ischl, so perfect for a lunch break if you want to visit both in a day as we did.
As with all vegan-friendly places in rural Austria, it’s definitely wise to call ahead and ask if they have vegan options that day. It’s happened to us a few times that I showed up assuming they could cater to our dietary needs, only to find out upon arrival that their only vegan option was already sold out for the day.
So we called ahead, reserved a table and were happy to find vegan ravioli with mushrooms, a side salad and even vegan apple cake for dessert.

Café Konditorei Zauner
Konditorei Zauner is an absolute must when visiting Bad Ischl. Their famous Zaunerstollen with dark chocolate as well as their Maroniherzen (Chocolate-covered chestnut hearts) just so happen to be accidentally vegan!
Unfortunately, they don’t serve any plant-milks along with their coffee to this point.
But you should definitely grab a vegan Zaunerstollen and maybe take some home with you as the make great edible souvenirs.

Flea Market
Every first Saturday of the month Bad Ischl becomes one giant flea market.
One of my favorite booths was the one below, that sold tons and tons of vintage ear clips, buttons, and other haberdasheries!

Kaiservilla
First off: Don’t trust Google Maps! If you’re trying to find the Kaiservilla, Google Maps will definitely lead you up a wrong path. We actually met another couple that was led astray and showed us the right path.
You’re better off following the instructions on the website or asking a local, old-school style!

The Kaiservilla is absolutely beautiful. However, it’s important to know that you can only visit with a guide, and taking photos inside is not allowed.
I still really enjoyed it because I love history and antique interiors.
Fun fact: I’ve been obsessed with Empress Elisabeth of Austria since I was a child. I actually have a portrait of her tattooed on my right forearm!
Bad Ischl is famous for being the place where Emperor Franz Joseph met and got engaged to Elisabeth in 1853.

Oh and just a heads up:
If taxidermy and hunting trophies unsettle you, you might want to skip the tour. Emperor Franz Joseph was an avid hunter and you will literally see thousands of them.

An easy descent through an avenue of oaks brings you to Empress Elisabeth’s Cottage or Tea Pavillion. The rose-grey marble Cottage, Franz Joseph’s wedding present to Sisi, is built in her honor in English 16th-century Elizabethan style. The delicate ironwork of the veranda that surrounds it is covered in the creepers of wild vine.
I immediately fell in love with this architectural beauty and to this day fantasize about living out the witchy cottage-core life of my dreams there.
It currently houses a photography exhibition, which we, unfortunately, couldn’t see because we were short on time.

Get a tattoo!
Here’s another tattoo and Bad Ischl – related fun fact about me:
Back when I started getting tattooed around 2008 there was only one studio in all of Austria that did traditional tattoos: Tattoos to the Max in Bad Ischl.
So on more than one occasion I took on a 3 hour rain ride to get a tattoo from Mäx.

Vegan-friendly Hotels and B&Bs around Bad Ischl
