If you know me or my blog, you know that I’m a vegan for ethical reasons but I also like to enjoy the finer things in life. What better way to combine the two than to enjoy a vegan fine dining experience? Believe it or not, even Austria has several vegan-friendly fine dining experiences to offer nowadays!
From all-vegetarian fine dining restaurants to more traditional gourmet places, that can whip up a vegan menu upon request, it’s no longer impossible to have a fancy meal that is all plant-based.
I’ve reviewed some of my favorites that I’ve already visited, as well as written to almost 30 restaurants that I haven’t been to yet. Because let’s be real, I do love great food and traveling the country, but it’ll take me a while to get to all of them! But don’t worry, I will keep updating this post every now and then.
To make it easier for you to find out which fine dining restaurants in Austria are the vegan-friendliest, I’ve created a little scale from one to five. I’ve also included all the awards and recognitions they’re gotten. Most of the restaurants listed are among the 100 best in the country!
So whether you’re traveling to Austria or live here and want to expand your culinary horizon, I hope you enjoy this guide of Vegan Fine Dining Restaurants in Austria!
If you enjoy this sort of guide, definitely also check out my One Perfect Vegan Day in Salzburg, One Perfect Vegan Day in Vienna, and One Perfect Vegan Day in Graz.

Tried and Tested Vegan Fine Dining in Austria
Bristol Lounge
💚💚💚💚
Kärntner Ring 1, 1010 Wien
Website
Personal review:
My husband and I have been to Bristol Lounge twice. Once for vegan afternoon tea and one time for a Valentine’s dinner. Both times we specified we would like vegan options upon reserving our table and both times we were treated to some delicious food. The restaurant is absolutely gorgeous and luxurious and service was great.
Extra points for offering a vegan afternoon tea upon request!
Creo.
💚💚💚💚💚
Blindengasse 3, 1080 Wien
No awards (yet)
Creo. is a relatively new star on the Viennese restaurant scene, impressing with its absolutely gorgeous architecture. Housed in a former office supply store, the ambiance exudes a moody 1920s speakeasy vibe complemented by edgy modern art. It stands out as one of the coziest fine dining establishments I’ve experienced, with the booths adding a unique dining ambiance.
Creo.’s concept revolves around customizability above all else. Whether you’re vegan and loathe celery, your friend is omnivorous but dislikes fish, or your mom is vegetarian but has an aversion to parsley, there’s no issue. Simply inform your server, and your menu will be tailored accordingly. I was particularly impressed by the creativity in crafting new flavor combinations on the spot. While it doesn’t always result in perfection immediately, as crafting a well-rounded dish takes time and often involves a trial period, the overall dining experience remains highly satisfying. I decided to put them to the test by ordering a vegan menu without celeriac root (even in winter!), while my husband had no dietary restrictions beyond preferring a fully vegan menu as well. Both menus delighted us, with the dessert variations being especially delicious.
However, I believe there’s room for improvement in the non-alcoholic drinks department. Given the restaurant’s focus on its cocktail selection, I expected more variety and creativity in their non-alcoholic offerings.
Despite these minor critiques, I must acknowledge that while I was kindly invited by Creo. to sample their vegan menu, and I mentioned that I was celebrating my belated birthday upon reserving our table. This presented an excellent opportunity for them to exceed expectations in terms of service, a crucial aspect that distinguishes a fine dining establishment from a regular dining experience, in my opinion. However, while the service was friendly, it fell short of reaching the level of exceptional service one might expect on such an occasion. Nonetheless, the evening was wonderful overall.
Gerüchteküche
💚💚💚💚💚+
Gartengasse 28, 8010 Graz
Gerüchteküche has been a longstanding presence, amassing an impressive array of awards. However, it’s been just two years since Chef Michael Wankerl made the bold decision to transition to a 100% plant-based menu. The ethos here is clear: all plants, low-waste practices, and regional produce take center stage, presented in a series of surprise courses. From the inventive Styrian Pani Puri to the standout dish featuring celeriac root alongside an umami-rich mushroom-based jus, Gerüchteküche showcases a mastery of vegetable-centric cuisine.
Despite the moniker “surprise menu,” don’t expect too many unexpected flavor combinations. In particular, the bread course (accompanied by hummus) and the dessert (featuring apple, caramel, and vanilla ice cream sans pastry) left something to be desired in terms of flavor. However, amidst these shortcomings, two dishes truly shone with vibrant flavors: the kohlrabi-dashi-sea buckthorn creation and the cabbage-caraway-bbq offering. This leads me to ponder whether the limitations of plant-based and regional cuisine in Austria during the winter months contributed to the lackluster taste of some dishes.
Yet, what Gerüchteküche may lack in culinary surprises, it makes up for with its friendly service. The staff are more than willing to offer insights into the dishes, enhancing the dining experience. Furthermore, the ambiance is refreshingly down to earth and casual, inviting patrons to relax and savor their plant-based feast in a welcoming atmosphere.
Extra points for being a 100% vegan restaurant!
Jola
💚💚💚💚💚+
Salzgries 15, 1010 Wien
Personal Review:
Jola is founded by Jonathan Wittenbrink and Larissa Andres who met at Tian Bistro and the concept is beautifully simple and elegant: a rich and flavorful plant-based tasting menu comprising regional and seasonal vegetables to prove that veganism can be indulgent and is not a diet.
That’s right up my alley!
The ambiance is cozy, yet elegant and feels intimate thanks to the close proximity to your neighboring table and the fact that you’re served by the owners. That means no long-winded recital of complicated dishes before each course, just a simple: “here’s what’s in it” and sometimes a little “here’s our thought behind the dish” as a look behind the curtain.
The menu consists of around 10 small courses and is well-rounded, creative, and diverse in flavor. You can choose between a classic wine pairing (all wines are organic) or a non-alcoholic beverage pairing, which is what we chose. As someone who rarely drinks alcohol, I greatly appreciate it when a place offers creative non-alcoholic drinks. Almost all of them are made in-house and fermented, such as Kombucha or Kefir, and are unique in flavor in a way that you don’t feel like you’re the kid at the table sipping on Robby Bubble while everyone else is having champagne. It’s an experience of its own and you should absolutely try it!
As all courses are created with seasonal and regional vegetables in mind, the menu might change according to availability, meaning every visit is a surprise. But you can always expect the highest quality and creativity from Jonathan and his team.
Only at the end of the night, you’re given a sheet of seed paper with the menu printed on it. You can take it home, spray it with water, and grow your own lettuce from it. You are also sent home with a little surprise (which I’m not spoiling for you!) to remember an already unforgettable night.
Jola’s attention to detail and laid-back ambiance atmosphere make it a wonderful fine dining experience for all foodies, not just vegans.
Extra points for being a 100% vegan restaurant!
Patara
💚💚💚💚
Petersplatz 1, 1010 Wien
Website
Personal Review:
Patara does not offer a full vegan tasting menu, however there are several vegan dishes to choose from á la carte, and many more that can be made vegan. Just ask your server! The food was good, but not exceptional. My personal favorite was the red curry! We were seated outside and I personally think the interior is a bit on the tacky side.

The Glass Garden
💚💚💚💚💚
Mönchsberg-Park 26, 5020 Salzburg
Website
Personal Review:
Let me start this off by saying: this was by far the best food-related experience I’ve had in my life. Every single dish was incredibly well balanced, beautifully served, and just plain delicious. The restaurant is tastefully decorated and bright with a gorgeous view of Salzburg and the exterior of the Mönchstein Castle is beautiful. More on our experience in my One Perfect Vegan Day in Salzburg post!
You probably guessed it already, this is my personal favorite vegan fine dining experience I’ve had in Austria.
If I HAD to point out one thing that could be improved upon, it would be that one of the amuse gueule was served on seashells, which isn’t exactly vegan. But the whole experience was so incredible, that I can see past this one small faux pas.
Tian
💚💚💚💚💚
Himmelpfortgasse 23, 1010 Wien
Website
Personal Review:
Tian is usually the first restaurant that comes to mind when hearing “vegan fine dining” in Austria. It’s world-renowned, 100% vegetarian, and has restaurants in Vienna and Munich. The vegetable is definitely the star of the show here. If you like really healthy food, this is the perfect place for you! However, for me personally, it was lacking full-bodied umami taste explosions. Most dishes tasted very “green”, as in, taste what it feels like to walk through a meadow after rain. It’s definitely a unique experience and every single dish was created with a lot of care and beautifully presented. I particularly enjoyed the vibe, it felt a lot more relaxed than a lot of other fine dining restaurants in this range, while still offering impeccable service. The dessert was absolutely outstanding! Bravo to the pâtissier!
Extra points for being an all-vegetarian restaurant!
Vestibül

Personal Review:
We first tried requesting a vegan menu via e-mail, but didn’t get a reply. So we called instead and they were super friendly and asked us how many courses we would like. We opted for a 5-course menu and would not be disappointed. Everything was wonderful, especially the dessert, which we still talk about quite often! Beautiful interior, although we were there in summer and dined al-fresco.

Personal Review:
We were invited to Wirtshaus Steirereck for a celebration my dad held. I just wrote them ahead and asked if they could prepare something vegan for me and my husband. I have a feeling they still sort of winged it on the evening of, but everything was lovely and they even prepared a vegan dessert for us.
More Vegan Fine Dining in Austria
I sent out an email to over 30 restaurants, with most of them among the top 100 restaurants in Austria asking them all the same questions.
Here’s what I asked:
- Can you prepare a vegan meal or tasting menu (upon request)?
- If so, can you tell me what a vegan tasting menu or dish might look like at your restaurant?
- Do you offer a vegan dessert?
- Does your sommelier know which of your wines are vegan?
- Do you serve foie gras?*
*Foie gras is a very cruel practice in which geese are force-fed to develop a very fatty liver, which is then turned into a “gourmet” paté. A lot of vegans avoid supporting restaurants that still have it on their menu.
Just a quick disclaimer: the “interviews” were held in German and carefully translated by me. I tried to transport the original tone of the messages but be aware that some nuance may be lost in translation!
