Pride month is over but you can (and should!) support queer-owned sustainable businesses all year long. Here are some of my favorites from international to European and local Austrian businesses.
Queer-Owned Sustainable Businesses – International
Brave Gentleman
USA
Brave GentleMan is an award-winning brand launched in 2010 most known for high-quality, expertly crafted vegan footwear. Brave GentleMan has been featured in Vogue, GQ, Forbes, The Financial Times and photographed on celebrities from Stephan James, Alan Cumming and Zach Woods to Liam Hemsworth, Joaquin Phoenix and Elliot Knight. In recent years, the brand was named Menswear Brand of the Year and Most Influential Designer by PETA.
Sanctuary Publishers
USA
Founded in May 2017 by vegan author & illustrator, Julia Feliz, our goal is to create a cycle where published books support pro-intersectional vegan organizations and sanctuaries while reinvesting funding to publish new books with unique and educational content.
Fluide Beauty
USA
We Are Fluide is a mission-driven beauty brand that creates vegan, cruelty-free and paraben-free cosmetics designed for all skin shades and gender expressions. We believe that makeup is joyful and fun — as well as powerful and transformative — and nobody should be left out.
Through providing a platform and amplifying the voices of queer and gender-expansive identities and through showcasing queer beauty, we hope to inspire others to create their identities on their own terms, opening up possibilities for everyone’s self-expression.
Queer-Owned Sustainable Businesses – Europe
Femme Forte
England
femme forte is a small business I run solo from my flat in Brighton to create a sustainable, ethical and kind fashion option. in this small corner of the fashion industry inclusion is fundamental, as is ensuring we are gentle on the planet. anything you see here will always be 100% cruelty-free, sweatshop free and will not hurt our planet. when printing designs, I will only ever use vegan inks that are free from toxic chemicals and all our clothing is made sustainably, by people who are treated well and paid fairly.
Wilde Mode
Scotland
We are an independent Vegan Brand based in Dundee, in Scotland. Wilde Mode was founded in August of 2018, through its founder’s mental health recovery and launched in January of 2019. Deborah is a single parent and a chronic health warrior who suffers from depression and fibromyalgia (amongst other things). We value ourselves as being gender and size-inclusive and pride ourselves on promoting positive mind, body and soul confidence!
Styngvi
Germany / Iceland
I’m Stefán Yngvi and I’m a full-time artist and illustrator from Iceland. I have been drawing and creating my whole life and in 2017 I found my calling. I started combining my art with activism and using my artistic talents to tell the stories I felt were important to tell. The causes that I advocate for are all close to my heart, such as animal liberation, climate justice and LGBTQ+ rights. With my artwork, I hope to plant seeds and create a discussion for a more sustainable lifestyle so all species can have a future on this planet.
Queer-Owned Sustainable Businesses in Vienna
Tarte au Citron
Even though Tarte Au Citron just started their little baking business, I already got to try their delicious french tartelettes and patisserie. Took my right back to 2010, when I went to Paris on my own and ate at least one tarte au citron a day (that was before I went vegan)!
You can order their amazing baked goods via email or Instagram DM or visit them at Vorgartenmarkt after the summer break.
Fett & Zucker
Hollandstraße 16, 1020 Wien
Delicious vegan cake, a good cup of coffee, a feminist magazine and The Smiths playing in the background, what more could you possibly want?
The Viennese Guy
Wiedner Hauptstraße 113, 1050 Wien
This concept store offers a variety of cute things from several local small businesses including “Ampelmännchen” merch. After Conchita Wurst won Eurovision and the songcontest was held in Vienna, the city decided to change some of the traffic light figures to couples in love – most of them depicting gay or lesbian presenting couples!
Sissy Sound
Margaretenstrasse 47, 1040 Vienna
We offer the hottest new and equally hot (and mostly pristine) 2nd-hand records, CDs, books, and magazines plus we also sell 2nd-hand record players and gift cards (for loved ones in love with music).
